decor balkan tour

This is Roger Pijano.

The first stop of our Decor Balkan tour with curator Ksenia Shestakovskaia: the all-seeing eye behind your favourite (or most despised) decor Instagram account @decorhardcore. Known for her obsession with snooping for lush decor through virtual archives, Ksenia didn’t take long to respond when we asked her to look out for tremendous Balkan decor treasures.

Enter Roger Pijano — a restaurant, wedding/party location, meant-to-be centre for health-tourism, and anything else you can’t possibly imagine on a 2000m² plot, located in the suburb of Skopje, Macedonia.

Usually a woman who’s not easily impressed, Ksenia was left completely speechless in front of Roger Zoran Iliev‘s creations. “Probably for the first time in my life I was witnessing absolutely unleashed and most outrageous flight of the human fantasy.” Ksenia recalls.

“My heart is usually alluring when I recognise such unusual authenticity — clash of the genres, colour choices and a countless amount of known and unknown symbols and elements, wrapped in child-like sloppy finishing, is the most Decorhardcore there is!”

Roger Zoran Iliev, the architect, says that the design concept is based on “signs that travel through time and open up a surrealistic image into a new dimension.” And that he “was having visions about every detail while sleeping.”

“The biggest message is Infinity,” He says. “Which is composed out of the eight pillars of the past, the paradise we live in, Salvador Dalì, the everlasting flower and the horoscope of the fish.”

This meaningful masterpiece was built in 2008 over just 16 months with only 120 workers, who manually crafted every detail under Roger’s supervision. Other architects would have probably taken two lifetimes under these conditions. Other people wouldn’t believe it at all when seeing what we saw.

“From the Art Nouveau-ish wood carving through Versace patterns, to the face of Jesus himself through the mirror reflection! I’m losing my breath in this decor agony and it feels goooood…” Ksenia roars while wandering through Roger Pijano’s dusty architectural escalations, which are by the way currently on sale, and just the first chapter of a giant resort-complex he envisioned topping with a piano-like roof.

Let’s all chip in to buy it!
